A new study is being conducted to help the FDA approve more than 400,000 Viagra pills in the U. S., the agency said on Thursday.
The study, conducted by researchers at the University of California San Francisco, analyzed more than 5,300 Viagra samples in a lab and found that the drug is a strong male impotence drug, and that the drugs can help people who struggle to maintain an erection.
In a study published online in the journalBioCartain May, researchers found that the drug had a significant effect on the production of nitric oxide in the body, which helps to relax the muscles in the penis, increasing blood flow.
The research is the first on the drug in more than two decades, and could potentially lead to new treatment options that could help men with erectile dysfunction.
"It's important to know that there's a lot of potential side effects and also there's still a lot of work to do to get these medications to work for them," said lead author Dr. David B. F. Karp, a urologist at the University of California, San Francisco. "We're really looking forward to more work in this area."
Viagra's primary ingredient, sildenafil citrate, is a type of medication known as a PDE5 inhibitor, meaning it works by blocking the enzyme that breaks down cGMP in the penis.
In this case, sildenafil inhibits the cGMP enzyme, preventing it from getting its cGMP active form to the smooth muscles and increasing blood flow.
Karp said he was still in the process of reviewing his study.
"It is very exciting," Karp said.
"I hope we can help with more studies and hopefully other medications that may help to treat some of the side effects of Viagra."
Karp is the author of several other studies that were published in the journal.
In June, the FDA granted approval for the drug to be sold by the company, and more studies are expected to be published.
Karp's latest study found that men who took the drug showed improvement in erections, which are defined as firm, long-lasting erections for more than four hours. The study was designed to evaluate how Viagra improved erectile function.
The researchers looked at about 10,000 Viagra pills, the first on the market, and then looked at other erectile dysfunction drugs that included sildenafil.
